Mendocino Terroir

The rugged coastline, foggy hills, and daily sunshine compose the foundation of the lush Mendocino terroir. Surrounded by redwoods, our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir garner power and grace from these unique elements, which help drive the purity of fruit and acid that is so essential to crafting excellent sparkling wine.

Nestled amongst old-growth redwoods, our 120-acre estate vineyard is located in the heart of Anderson Valley. Our vineyard is planted to Chardonnay (32%), Pinot Noir (66%), and Pinot Meunier (2%). The Chardonnay is comprised of two clonal selections (131 & 4), Pinot Noir of five clonal selections (4, 13, 115, 667, & 777), and Pinot Meunier of one clonal selection (1). All three varieties, which thrive in our soils and cool coastal climate, are the traditional grapes grown in Champagne. To complement our production, we also source fruit from Mendocino growers with whom we have long-term contracts.\

Respectfully listening to nature guides our efforts of sustainability. From preserving the 900-year-old redwood grove, the 63 acres entrusted to the Anderson Valley Land Trust for its conservation efforts of neighboring Indian creek, to farming 120 acres of sustainable and Fish Friendly certified vineyards, Scharffenberger’s connection to the land runs deep.

In the vineyard, we’re committed to enriching our soils through the use of cover crops in the winter and applying our homegrown compost and biochar. These efforts result in healthy, nutrient rich, and resilient soils that have increased water holding capacity. Reducing our impact further, we reclaim the winery’s wash water and store the winter rainfall in our ponds for irrigation and frost protection.
