Jeb Dunnuck 90 Points
The second wine 2021 Pichon Comtesse Reserve is based on 56% Cabernet Sauvignon 36% Merlot, and 8% Petite Verdot. It's a solid second wine that brings good intensity in its ripe red and blue fruits (plums, redcurrants) as well as classic Pauillac graphite, tobacco, and spicy oak. It's medium-bodied, balanced, and elegant, with fine tannins and an incredibly drinkable style.
The Wine Independent 90 Points
A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot, the 2021 Pichon Comtesse Reserve is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a bit of shaking to wake up scents of juicy black raspberries and red plums, fragrant earth and wild roses, followed by suggestions of bay leaves and pencil lead. The light to medium-bodied palate has great freshness and lightly chewy tannins to support the lively black berry flavors, finishing with an herbal lift.
Wine Spectator 91 Points
Engaging, with a flurry of violet, alder and black tea notes leading off, followed by a solidly built core of black currant and sweet bay leaf elements. The finish reveals warm earth and cast iron details. A textbook Pauillac. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2034.
The Wine Advocate 91 Points
Wafting from the glass with notes of blackberries, minty cassis, petals and pencil shavings, the 2021 Resèrve de la Comtesse is medium to full-bodied, ample and polished, with a fleshy core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins and a seamless, succulent profile. This beautifully balanced wine will drink well on release. It's one of the most successful second wines produced this year.
Vinous Media 93 Points
The 2021 Réserve de la Comtesse has developed into an elegant, polished Pauillac. Silky, aromatic and racy, the 2021 is seriously impressive. Graphite, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice meld into a core of dark blue/purplish fruit. In some recent years, the Réserve has been a big wine, maybe too big. In 2021, it’s a wine of unbelievable elegance. The winemaking team gave this a bit more new oak (70%) at the beginning of élevage—an unusual choice—then dialed it back to 60% for 12 months.
Decanter 90 Points
Perfumed blackcurrants on the nose and palate - juicy and succulent, the tannins are mouthfilling and have a cool blue fruit flavour, almost blueberry and plum, fresh with a softly fleshy texture. Lovely depth on the mid-palate, it doesn't let up - going from start to finish with gusto. You also get liquorice, clove tones - dark spiced aspects but they’re integrated and don't cause angles just nuances in terms of flavour. You've definitely got the Pauillac power and concentration but also an energy that is so captivating. A confident second wine that has direction.
Overview
The second growth of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the Réserve de la Comtesse, was created and sold for the first time in 1973. Second growths represent between 20 percent and 50 percent of the total production of the Château. From the same soil, the second growth benefits from the technology and reputation of the great wine. The archives kept at Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande mention the existence of a second wine as early as the 19th century.
The vast majority of the vineyards are Gunzian gravel mounds of the classic Pauillac composition, with the deep bed of gravel placed over a substrata of clay and limestone. The commitment to sustainable farming practices extends throughout the 220 acres of vineyards, with over 27 acres fully converted to organic viticulture, and 37 acres farmed biodynamically.
Tasting Notes
The complex nose evokes raspberry and wild strawberry, but also fresher notes of lilac and citrus, rosemary and liquorice. On the palate, we find the pure beauty of raspberry and cherry, balanced with a light, precise tannic structure that brings definition and an elegant finish.
Harvest Notes
After a mild and wet winter, the bud break of the vines started quite early, at the end of March. April and May, dry and cool, delayed the developing vegetation, causing a little coulure. June, which was milder, started the flowering and the growth of the vines suddenly accelerated. But this milder weather was also accompanied by record rainfall, particularly in the south of the Pauillac appellation. The young vegetation was then subjected to very strong pressure from fungal diseases, particularly mildew, which had a serious impact on the fruit set and berry development. While the Merlot was severely affected, the Cabernet, the majority of the grape varieties at Pichon Comtesse, resisted better. The cool and wet summer did not stop the progression of mildew and led to a very slow veraison. The harvest began on September 22nd, after a few rainy spells with no real consequences, and ended on October 5th.
